Official dedication was postponed another several months until March 1918, when the university celebrated its 50th anniversary. Then, the Campanile was dedicated along with other new buildings, and the project was, at last, “done.”. This history meant that the Campanile’s construction and dedication milestones extended over five years, from summer 1913 to early 1918. The Centennial Committee finally recommended that the tower celebration should be this year, in 2015, marking 100 years after the construction work was finished. The official celebration is now well underway, and will culminate this fall during Alumni and Parents weekend on Oct. 2 to 4.

More important, these flashbacks introduce us to the three men who will become Sophie’s “fathers.” (The first movie was about determining which of the three men was her biological dad; they all decided to assume the mantle.). Needless to say, no one comes to a “Mamma Mia!” movie for the plot. They come for the Abba. While any similarly conceived musical might struggle with jamming songs into a story they were not written for, the music must still function in the way songs do in traditional musicals. If they can’t do that, they at least must provide some fun. Here, they do neither.

For veteran jazz vocalist Laurie Antonioli, the creative flash occurred during a few minutes of down time before teaching a class at the California Jazz Conservatory, where she founded and runs the highly respected jazz vocal program. Her class accompanist, pianist Matt Clark, started playing the obscure Joni Mitchell tune “Boho Dance,” and she quickly chimed in. Realizing that his obsession with Mitchell’s music matched her own, they launched into an impromptu song session that led directly to her revelatory new album “Songs of Shadow, Songs of Light: The Music of Joni Mitchell” (Origin Records).
