The madcap comedy showcases Porter’s witty lyrical wizardry to marvelous effect. Center Rep artistic director Michael Butler gives the musical a lively, pitch-perfect staging with a sharp 23-person cast. The singers and the 10-piece orchestra directed by Brandon Adams on the upper deck do a superb job with Porter’s sprightly music. It’s a very silly love story set on an ocean liner — and a stylish one, with art deco touches in Michael Locher’s elegant set. A young stockbroker named Billy Crocker (charming, humorous and sweet-voiced Joshua Hollister) is in love with an upper-class debutante, Hope Harcourt (a decorous Brittany Danielle). Hope loves him, too, but she’s engaged to a foppish English nobleman, Sir Evelyn Oakleigh (Jeffrey Draper, hilariously clueless) and could never consider marrying a commoner.

We are so lucky to have a local opera company that can produce an opera at an affordable ticket price. One loves opera increasingly with experience. Music is like that. The better we know it, the more moving it becomes, and opera offers so many perspectives to be experienced. In a live performance, an audience member becomes one with the drama onstage and the drama of the singer taking dangerous vocal chances without a net. One becomes carried away by the music, feels the singer’s vocal victory even as their character loses all.
