The day-long event known as Youthsava 2016 drew hundreds of performers and their families and helped connect people to Indian heritage and culture. The Youthsava encouraged youth ages 4 to 18 to show off their teamwork skills and creative abilities by planning and performing a dance routine to Indian folk and Bollywood music. “Approximately 1,000 youth performed in the course of the 12-hour competition,” India Community Center Executive Director Pragati Grover said. Saying there were 19 winners, she noted the different age categories for the competition were: Sub-junior performers (ages 4 to 8), junior dancers (age 9 to 13) and senior performers (age 14 to 18).

But most participants kept it simple and true to the iconic red-white-and blue look of Rosie the Riveter. “She’s a strong woman,” said Nancy Esponisa, 36, of Richmond. She and her daughters joined Alejandre and her family to the festival. “We are working women too, and sometimes we feel we don’t get the recognition out there.”.
